Where to buy alcohol in Tamraght: a survival guide

No, you cannot buy alcohol in Tamraght. The village has no liquor stores, bars, or licensed supermarkets. If you want a cold beer or a bottle of wine after surfing Devil's Rock, you will need to make a 15-minute taxi trip to Agadir or visit a licensed restaurant in nearby Taghazout.

Why Tamraght is completely dry

Tamraght is a traditional Berber fishing and farming village. While it has grown significantly over the last decade due to the surf scene, it remains conservative and family-oriented. There are no liquor stores, bars, or licensed restaurants within the village limits. The local grocery stores, known as hanouts, sell plenty of fresh mint, mineral water, and Coca-Cola, but they do not stock alcohol of any kind.

Why Tamraght is completely dry

For us, this is part of the charm. It keeps the evenings quiet and the focus on getting up early for the morning glass at Devil's Rock or Crocros. But if you want a cold beer after a five-hour session in the salt, you have to plan ahead.

The local shops only stock the basics

If you walk into any shop in Tamraght expecting to find a light lager, you will leave empty-handed. The owners are local Muslims who do not drink or sell alcohol due to religious and cultural practices. Please do not ask them for it, as it can be considered disrespectful. Stick to buying your bottled water, local bananas, and fresh bread from them.

Where to buy alcohol near Tamraght

Since you cannot buy a single bottle of beer in town, you have two choices: drive south to Agadir or head north to a licensed venue in Taghazout.

The Agadir grocery run

Agadir is 15 kilometers south of Tamraght. It is the closest place with retail liquor licenses. A grand taxi from the main road in Tamraght to Agadir costs about 10 to 15 DH per seat, or you can book a private ride for around 100 DH (10 Euros).

Once in Agadir, you have three reliable options for buying drinks to bring back to the camp:

Expect to pay about 1.50 to 2 Euros for a local Flag Spéciale beer and 6 to 12 Euros for a drinkable bottle of Moroccan red wine, like Guerrouane.

Licensed spots in Taghazout

Taghazout is just 5 kilometers north of us. While you still cannot buy bottles to take home there, a few hotels and restaurants hold liquor licenses. Places like Amouage, Sol House, and Fairmont Taghazout Bay serve alcohol to non-guests. Be prepared to pay premium prices here. A small beer will easily cost you 5 to 7 Euros, which is significantly more than buying it yourself in Agadir.

"There is nothing better than sitting on our terrace with a cold Casablanca beer after coaching a six-hour session at K11. But we always remind guests: buy your stock on the way from the airport. Otherwise, you are looking at a 40-minute round-trip taxi ride just for a six-pack." — Coach Yassine

Practical tips for planning your supply

If you want to enjoy a drink on our rooftop at sunset, we always recommend being strategic about your arrival. Here is how we usually advise our guests to handle it:

  1. Buy at duty-free: You can bring up to one liter of spirits or four liters of wine into Morocco per person. Buy this at your departure airport and bring it in your carry-on.
  2. Stop on the way from the airport: If you book an airport transfer with us from Agadir-Al Massira Airport (AGA), ask your driver to stop at the Carrefour in Agadir. It adds about 15 minutes to the trip and saves you a dedicated journey later.
  3. Check the opening hours: Liquor stores and supermarket alcohol sections in Agadir close earlier than the main store, usually by 8:00 PM. During Ramadan, they close entirely for the month.
  4. Keep it low-key: Drinking in public spaces, including the beach at Devil's Rock or Crocodile Beach, is illegal and highly frowned upon. Keep your drinks to private terraces and our surf camp rooftop.

People also ask

Can I bring alcohol into Morocco?

Yes, you can legally bring up to one liter of spirits or four liters of wine per person through Moroccan customs. You can purchase this at your departure airport duty-free and pack it in your luggage before leaving Agadir airport.

Do surf camps in Tamraght sell beer?

Most surf camps in Tamraght do not have liquor licenses, meaning they cannot sell alcohol. However, many camps, including ours, are happy for you to bring your own drinks to enjoy on the rooftop terraces after a long day of surfing.

Are there any bars in Taghazout?

There are no traditional standalone bars, but several high-end hotels and surf resorts in Taghazout have liquor licenses. You can buy a beer or cocktail at spots like Amouage or the Hyatt Regency, located a short taxi ride from Tamraght.

How much does a taxi to Agadir cost?

A private taxi from Tamraght to Agadir costs about 100 DH (10 Euros) each way. You can also take a shared grand taxi for around 10 to 15 DH per person, which drops you off near the main transport hubs in Agadir.

Ultimately, Tamraght’s dry status keeps the village peaceful and free from the loud nightlife of larger tourist cities. It means we all wake up with clear heads, ready to check the swell at first light. If you want to have a few drinks during your stay, just remember to stock up in Agadir or duty-free beforehand. We have plenty of fridge space and ice waiting for you at the camp. See you in the lineup soon.
