Morocco Surf Trip: 7 Things You Need to Know Now

Heading to Nomad Surf Camp? Don't pack your bags without reading this first. We cover money, culture, and the essentials for a smooth, incredible surf trip.

Planning Your Moroccan Surf Trip? Read This First.

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you’re probably booked in, or seriously thinking about coming to surf with us at Nomad. Good choice! We work hard to be a true top surf camp experience.

Morocco is awesome, totally unique, and the waves are sick. But it's not like going to Spain or Portugal. Here's the essential stuff you need to know before you land.

Money Talk: Cash is King

Forget your fancy credit card outside of the big airports and hotels. Morocco runs on cash, especially in smaller towns like Taghazout or Tamraght.

  • Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD). You can’t bring it in or take it out, so just get it from an ATM when you arrive.
  • ATMs: Available in the airports and bigger towns (like Agadir). Hit the ATM right when you land.
  • Tipping: Tipping is expected for good service (guides, drivers, restaurant staff). Keep some small bills handy.

Dress Code (Keep it Chill, But Respectful)

We are a coastal, tourist-focused area, but Morocco is a conservative Muslim country.

On the beach near the camp, wear whatever you want—bikinis, board shorts, totally fine. But when we head into town (Taghazout center, or Agadir for supplies), you need to cover up a bit more.

  • Women: Throw on a long skirt, loose pants, or a cover-up that hits the knee, and cover your shoulders. It's just a sign of respect, and you'll feel more comfortable getting around.
  • Men: T-shirts and shorts are fine in towns.

The Water Rule: Only Bottled Water

Seriously, stick to bottled water. We know you've probably heard this before, but it's important.

  • Drinking: Bottled water only.
  • Ice: Avoid ice in drinks outside of reliable places (like our camp!).
  • Brushing Teeth: Use bottled water to brush your teeth. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Don't worry about the food at Nomad Surf Camp; we use fresh, safe ingredients and know what we are doing. Moroccan food is incredible, so get ready to eat well!

Language Basics

Learning a few words of Darija goes a long way:

  • Hello/Peace: Salam Alaikum
  • Thank You: Shukran
  • No: La

Getting Here and Staying Connected

Fly into Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA). We handle the airport transfer, so tell us your flight time and we’ll be there. Our place is about a 45-minute drive north of the airport.

The WiFi at the camp is decent for checking emails and posting your surf photos, but if you need reliable internet for work, buy a local SIM card (Maroc Telecom or Orange) at the airport. Data is cheap and reliable.

See You Soon!

Morocco is stunning, welcoming, and the waves are magic. Just keep these simple tips in mind, and you'll have zero problems. Get ready for an epic surf trip!
