Taghazout vs. Tamraght: Which Surf Town Should You Pick?
Deciding between Taghazout and Tamraght for your Moroccan surf trip? Taghazout is busy, famous for advanced surfing (Anchor Point), and has a lively nightlife, while Tamraght is calmer, cheaper, and perfect for beginners and intermediates looking for a relaxed surf camp experience.
Taghazout vs. Tamraght: Which Surf Town is Better For You?
Hey guys! If you’re planning a surf trip to Morocco, you’ve probably heard of Taghazout and Tamraght. They are super close (like a 5-minute drive), but they feel totally different. People always ask us at Nomad Surf Camp which one is better. The quick answer? It depends on what you want!
We’re going to break down the vibe, the crowds, the costs, and the surfing so you can make the right choice.
Taghazout: The OG Surf Vibe
Taghazout is the classic, well-known Moroccan surf village. It used to be a tiny fishing town, and now it's packed with surf hostels, cafes, and shops. It’s definitely got the buzz.
The Vibe & Crowds
- Vibe: Busy, energetic, and slightly chaotic. It’s got a backpacker feel and a great nightlife scene if you want to hang out after sunset.
- Crowds: It gets crowded, especially during peak season (winter). The main street is often jammed with people, cars, and vendors.
- Accommodation: Lots of hostels and apartments right on the water. Good range of prices, but generally a bit pricier than Tamraght because of the location and name recognition.
Surfing in Taghazout
This is where Taghazout shines. It has world-famous spots right there:
- Anchor Point: One of the best right-hand point breaks in the world. Best for intermediate and advanced surfers.
- Killer Point: Another great point break, often a bit heavier than Anchor Point.
- Mysteries & Hash Point: Good, accessible waves that work well on smaller swells.
The Catch: Because these spots are so good, they are often very busy. You need to be comfortable surfing in a crowd.
Tamraght: The Laid-Back Alternative
Tamraght is just down the road from Taghazout, but it’s still relatively chilled out. It’s where many surf camps, including Nomad Surf Camp, choose to base themselves because it offers a quieter, more authentic Moroccan feel.
The Vibe & Crowds
- Vibe: Relaxed, calm, and friendly. It feels more like a real village than a tourist hub. It's a better choice if you want to focus purely on surfing, chilling, and sleeping well.
- Crowds: Much less crowded than Taghazout. You can actually walk down the street without bumping into people.
- Accommodation: Good-value surf houses and camps, often with amazing rooftop terraces and views. Generally cheaper and quieter than staying in the middle of Taghazout.
Surfing in Tamraght
Tamraght is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers, mostly because of the beach breaks nearby.
- Banana Point: A very popular, long right-hand point break that is generally easier and gentler than Anchor Point. Great for intermediates.
- Devil's Rock: A fantastic spot that offers both a point break and a beach break. Perfect for learning and catching lots of waves.
- K17 (Km 17): A great, consistent beach break often used by surf schools for lessons.
The Benefit: While you still have to drive a few minutes to the biggest waves (Anchor Point), Tamraght is right on the doorstep of the best beginner and mid-level spots.
The Final Verdict: Pick Your Flavor
Choose Taghazout if:
You want to be in the middle of the action, you don’t mind crowds, you love nightlife and lots of restaurants, and you are mostly an intermediate/advanced surfer who wants easy access to Anchor Point.
Choose Tamraght if:
You want a calmer, more relaxed vibe, you prefer to spend less money, you want easy access to beginner and intermediate beaches (like Devil’s Rock), and you want to stay at a dedicated, focused surf camp like Nomad Surf Camp.
The good news? Since they are only 5km apart, you can easily stay in Tamraght for the relaxed atmosphere and still pop over to Taghazout for dinner or a surf session. At Nomad Surf Camp, we surf wherever the waves are best that day, meaning we drive you between all these spots anyway!
