Can I Surf in Morocco in February? (Spoiler: Yes!)

February is peak surf season in Morocco, guaranteeing consistent, powerful waves hitting the famous point breaks. Don't worry about the size; we have sheltered spots perfect for total beginners while experts get world-class rides.

Can you surf in Morocco in February? Short Answer: Yes, Absolutely.

Let’s cut to the chase. February is one of the best months for surfing here in Morocco, specifically around Taghazout and Tamraght where Nomad Surf Camp is based. It's peak winter, which means the swells are firing.

We often get messages asking if it’s "too cold" or "too big" in February. The truth is, while the waves are definitely consistent and powerful this time of year, the geography of our coast means there's always a perfect spot for whatever level you’re at.

Why February is Peak Surf Season

February falls right in the middle of our high season (October to March). This means you’re basically guaranteed quality waves every single day. The Atlantic ocean is seriously active, sending huge, clean groundswells down to our point breaks.

Surfing in February if You Are a Beginner (Level 1)

If you're worried about huge waves, don't be. Our job is to find the shelter. Even when famous spots like Anchor Point are double overhead, the protected bays nearby are perfect for learning.

  • Protected Spots: We usually head to Tamri (a consistent beach break) or specific sheltered areas of Taghazout Bay where the waves break softly.
  • The Goal: Catching consistent white-water waves and standing up easily without fighting the heavy currents.
  • Gear Check: We use soft-top boards which are super stable, even when the ocean is energized.

Surfing in February if You Are Intermediate or Advanced

If you’re chasing long rides, February is absolutely your time. This is when the famous Moroccan point breaks really turn on and link up, sometimes providing rides over 300 meters.

  • Intermediate Fun: You’ll be tackling spots like Banana Point or Mysteries. Long, predictable rights that let you practice speed and turns away from the heavy crowds of the expert spots.
  • Expert Territory: Anchor Point, Killer Point, Boilers. These spots require fitness, respect, and skill, but they deliver world-class waves that make the trip worthwhile.

Practical Stuff: Weather and Water Temp

February is lovely, but it’s winter, so pack smart.

What About the Cold?

The air temperature during the day is generally mild and sunny (often mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, or 18-22°C). However, the water is the coldest it gets all year (around 16-18°C).

  • Wetsuit Needed: Definitely a full suit. A 3/2mm is standard, but if you get cold easily, bring a 4/3mm. Don’t worry if you don’t have one; Nomad Surf Camp has high-quality rentals ready for you.
  • Clothing: Bring shorts for the daytime sun, but definitely pack a warm jumper and long pants for the evenings, as it cools down quickly once the sun sets.
