The Best Time to Surf in Morocco: Month-by-Month Guide
Wondering when to visit Morocco for surf? Check out our simple month-by-month guide to find the perfect waves for your level, from big winter swells to mellow summer sets.
Morocco's Atlantic coastline is one of the most consistent surf destinations in the world. But when is the best time to visit? The short answer: almost any time — but each season offers something different. Here's everything you need to know before booking your trip.
Morocco's Surf Seasons at a Glance
Morocco sits at a sweet spot on the Atlantic coast, benefiting from swells generated far out in the North Atlantic. This means waves nearly year-round, with different seasons suiting different skill levels.
September to November — The Sweet Spot
Autumn is widely considered the best time to visit Morocco for surfing. Swells start picking up after the flat summer months, water temperatures are still warm from summer (around 20–22°C), and the crowds haven't fully arrived yet.
October in particular is a favourite — waves are consistent, the weather is sunny and warm on land (25–28°C), and the lineup at spots like Anchor Point and Banana Point is manageable. This is the window when intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most rewarding conditions.
December to February — Peak Swell Season
Winter brings Morocco's biggest and most powerful swells. Spots like Anchor Point come alive with long, peeling right-handers that attract surfers from across Europe. Water temperatures dip to around 16–18°C (a 3/2mm wetsuit is enough), but the waves more than make up for it.
This is the time for experienced surfers and those chasing proper point break rides. Beginners can still surf — Tamraght's beach breaks like Banana Point offer mellow waves even when bigger swells hit.
March to May — Spring Perfection
Spring is arguably the most underrated surf season in Morocco. Swells are still consistent but slightly smaller and cleaner than winter. The water begins to warm again, the sun is strong, and the tourist crowds thin out after winter breaks.
This season is ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers who want real progression without being overwhelmed by size.
June to August — Summer Vibes and Beginner Waves
Summer sees smaller swells, but that's not a bad thing. Beach breaks produce gentle, mellow waves that are perfect for learning. Water temperatures peak at 22–24°C, and the long days mean more time in the water.
Summer is Nomad Surf Camp's busiest season for learn-to-surf courses — if you've never surfed before, this is a fantastic time to start.
