Tamraght vs Taghazout: Where Should You Surf in Morocco?

Deciding between Tamraght and Taghazout for your Morocco surf trip? Here is a simple guide to help you choose the best village for your waves and vibes.

If you're planning a surf holiday in Morocco, you've probably come across two names over and over: Tamraght and Taghazout. These two villages sit just a few kilometres apart on Morocco's Atlantic coast, and both are legitimate surf destinations. But they have a very different feel — and the right choice depends on what you're looking for.

Here's an honest breakdown from our team at Nomad Surf Camp, based in Tamraght.

The Location

Both Tamraght and Taghazout are roughly 20 kilometres north of Agadir, hugging the coastline of the Souss-Massa region. Taghazout is slightly further north; Tamraght sits just to the south. They're close enough that staying in either village gives you easy access to all the surf spots in between — including Anchor Point, Hash Point, Banana Point, Devil's Rock, and more.

The Vibe

Taghazout has transformed dramatically in the past decade. It went from a quiet fishing village to a buzzing surf town with cafés, restaurants, surf shops, and boutique riads on every street. It's lively, social, and a bit touristy — which some people love, others don't.

Tamraght is more relaxed. It retains more of its original character as a small Berber village. You'll find fewer tourists, lower prices, quieter streets, and a stronger sense of local community. For surfers who want to immerse themselves in genuine Moroccan life alongside their waves, Tamraght feels more authentic.

The Waves

Here's the thing: both villages share the same stretch of coastline, so the waves are essentially the same. From Tamraght you're a short walk or drive from:

  • Banana Point — ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers
  • Devil's Rock — fun reef break, good for intermediates
  • Crocro — beach break, great for learning
  • Anchor Point (a few minutes north) — world-famous right-hand point break for experienced surfers
  • Hash Point and Killer Point — classic Taghazout breaks

Surf camps in both villages run daily guided sessions to all of these spots.

The Prices

Generally speaking, Tamraght tends to be slightly more affordable than Taghazout — for accommodation, food, and transport. As Taghazout has become more popular, prices have risen to match. If value is important to you, Tamraght is usually the better deal.

Who Should Choose Tamraght?

  • You want a quieter, more authentic experience
  • You're travelling as a couple, solo, or in a small group
  • You value good-value accommodation with a community feel
  • You want to surf without fighting for space in the lineup
  • You're interested in digital nomad / work-and-surf retreats

Who Should Choose Taghazout?

  • You want more nightlife, restaurants, and social options
  • You enjoy a bustling, international surf town atmosphere
  • You prefer a wider choice of surf schools and shops on your doorstep

Our Take

Both villages are brilliant, and you genuinely can't go wrong with either. But at Nomad Surf Camp, we chose Tamraght for a reason — it's where Morocco feels most like Morocco. The community is warm, the waves are consistent, and the pace of life reminds you why you came here in the first place.
